Reading A: Japanese Myth

Kintaro - Tokyo Times
The reading this week was super fun! I've had kind of a hard time getting into them recently, maybe because I don't have as much of a background with these but I've really enjoyed the Japanese myths! My favorite this week was My Lord Bag of Rice because I felt like it really differentiated itself from other stories. The dragon isn't the monster that should be slain, it's a King testing the hero's strength and the "villain" is actually actually a centipede. The description of the centipede basically traumatized me and I'll pretty much be terrified by bugs for the rest of my life but other than that I really enjoyed the story! I also enjoyed Kintaro The Golden Boy. This story was a little more traditional, about a boy with unusual strength who grows up in the woods alone with his mother. It is interesting how many mythological stories feature men born with incredible strength - an early form of the wish-fulfillment genre. At the end of the story the boy gets noticed by a famous general and recruited to be a warrior - which his mother sees as a great honor and has always wanted for him.
