It was interesting to get to explore the Un-Textbook! As I've expressed in previous posts most of my college experience has been spent in very strict classes with a very specific textbook. So the concept of a "Build your own adventure" class made me nervous, but after researching it I'm really stoked! I'm really excited to explore some of the Biblical units - I wasn't expecting these to be included! I am actually a Christian so I'm really excited to get to study more, especially about
women in the bible! Those stories really interest me because there are so few women (comparatively) mentioned in the Bible and I think getting to study more of their stories will be a new and insightful way for me to look at a religion I've grown up with. Especially when I see things like "the witch of endor" which isn't a name that I'm familiar with - how cool! I'm also looking forward to the
Cupid and Psyche unit! When I started looking into this unit I wasn't expecting so many stories! I would say that classical myth is the category of folklore I am most familiar with and there's still so much I don't know! I really enjoyed the comparison between Psyche and a Disney Princess, it really is crazy that no one has animated her yet! I decided to look also into the Middle Eastern myths and the
Egyptian ones really caught my eye! Almost everything I know about Egypt mythology is based on Indiana Jones movies so this is definitely a new frontier for me! Another unit,
Folklore of the Holy Land stood out as well. It's always been crazy to me that three of the worlds most prolific religions are centered around the same area and now I'll get the chance to learn more about that!
