Lucerne, Switzerland...My Favorite Place

Chapel Bridge over the Reuss in Lucerne (Switzerland). Picture by Horst Michael Lechner
I visited Lucerne for the first time the summer after I graduated high school. I was on whirlwind world tour - 20 recent grads, 5 countries, three weeks. At the time Switzerland was just a detour between France and Italy - I've never been much of an outdoor girl and figured if I wanted to look at mountains so badly I could make them my desktop screensaver. But from the first moment my feet hit the dirt roads of the tiny ski village we were staying in, I was hooked. In retrospect this was due in large part to the incredible people I met in the three days we were in Lucerne and the unbelievable things we got up to (two words: Swiss. Prom.) But when I think back to that trip it's not the bad techno pop I remember or the taste of swiss beer or the laughs of my new friends as we traded stories in the attic of a boarding school - It's the mountains.

  1. How marvelous, Amanda: I think this is the first time Lucerne has shown up as a favorite place. I bet it is beautiful! Maybe you will even want to do a Swiss-themed Storybook for this class; nobody has ever done that before. I know of at least one Swiss folklore book online; here it is: Legends of Switzerland ... when you are brainstorming possible topics in Week 2, you can take a look at that book and see what you think!
