Woah this weeks reading was a doozy!! I thought choosing Myths from the Holy Land would be really cool to help me with my Storybook on Biblical Women (shoutout to all the BBWs out there). And in some ways I was right! Adam our Father touched briefly on Lilith who I had been considering covering because she's pretty unknown to a lot of people. I knew that she was a well known mythical figure but had no idea that she was actually featured in the Karan so that was really cool! I think it is interesting to contrast Lilith, who was equal to Adam, and Eve who is pretty decidedly secondary (she did come from his rib after all). I think this potentially says a lot about what kind of women those societies valued and wanted other young women to emulate. In what I can only describe as the most offensive thing I've read this week - Noah describes three different types of women. God fearing women, "stupid indolent slatterns who need driving with a stick" and shrews. Gosh slattern is such a surprisingly offensive word!!! I don't want to get on my soapbox but I mean what on earth did young women growing up think when they read this - I hope I'm not the donkey women? I really don't want to be insensitive but I that was just a pretty uninspiring ending to the pretty awesome story of Noah - I was hoping for a little more flooding and a little less misogyny. That being said it has been really cool to get to compare and contrast Islam / Judaism / Christianity. It really is crazy when you consider how many things those three religions share! Still I'm holding out for some more incredible Islamic Women in Reading B!
